Noted events in his life were:
• About 1899, he emigrated from New Zealand with his mother, brother and sister to India.
• Samuel graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Philosophy from Yale, in June 1908. He worked as a waiter to get himself through school.
Mr. S. L. De- Carteret, younger eon of the late Mr. S. J. De Carteret, of Remueni, graduated on June 24 with the degree of bachelor of philosophy at Yale University, U.S.A. Mr. De Carteret, who is only 22 years of age, hae secured an appointment with a British company, now surveying 200 square miles of forest in the back woods of Canada. He received his primary education at the Remuera Board school, under the late headmaster, Mr. Heriot
• In 1908, he joined a British company surveying the back woods of Canada.

He subsequently served In various executive capacities for the Brown Corporation, the Hammer... Paper Company and the Brompton Pulp and Paper Company. 

Prominent in the pulp and paper industry in Canada for many years, Mr. de Carteret joined the Canadian International Paper Company in 1938 as vice-president and general manager. 

He became president of the, company in 1947 and held the post until being made chairman of the board In 1953. 

Mr. de Carteret took an active part In the affairs of the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association, serving as chairman of its executive board in 1947.
