Am I a 'stray De Carteret'? My great grandmother was Clara De Carteret, daughter of Peter D De Carteret and Maria Hamon. On the Cercle de Carteret website I believe 2 Peters are jumbled and my great- grandmother is missing.Peter D was the son of Stephen[Etienne] and Nancy born1859 approx .The other Peters' parents are Peter and Susan,he was born in 1850 and his wife was Louisa.Clara was born in 1884 and married George Johns, both from Vale, Guernsey. They had 2 daughters,Helena Maude born 1905 approx and Winifred born 1908 approx. The 1911 census shows George a widower living with his parents on Alderney.Helena Maude [my grandmother]married Edmund Robinson in England  in 1932 and they had 1 child my father Gerrard Francis Pascal Robinson in1934.Helena Maude died in 1949,we do not know anything of Winifred. That whole side of our families history is very sketchy and so it would be very much appreciated if the Johns and Robinson names could be added to your surname index in the hope others looking might find us.If you  would like information about the rest of my siblings[there are 6 of us] please let me know

INQUEST OF MARIE ANN HAMON

20TH JANUARY 1910
THE STAR

An inquest was held at the Court House this morning before William Carey, Esq, Bailiff and Jurats G E Kinnersly and J Leale, the first to ascertain the cause of death of Marie Ann Hamon, wife of Mr Peter De Carteret, who died at her residence, l’Ancresse, on Sunday morning last, aged about 50 years.
P C Lihou said that at 8 o’clock on Sunday evening he was informed of Mrs De Carteret’s death. Witness proceeded to the house and saw the body lying in bed. Witness examined the stairs, which were only eleven in number, but very steep. At the bottom was a pool of blood, and bloodstains were noticeable on some of the stairs. Witness described deceased as “no class” and addicted to drink.”
Albert De Carteret said deceased was his mother. He walked with her to St Sampson’s Bridge on Saturday and returned an hour later in the bus. Deceased was then apparently sober. Witness left his mother sitting near the fire and went out until 11 p m. She had not had a drink during the afternoon.
Mrs Bowden said she saw deceased at 2.30 and again at 4 o’clock on Saturday afternoon. She was drunk at the time, but witness did not take any notice her as she was often seen in that state.
Mr John Carre, a neighbour, said he saw Mrs De Carteret on Saturday morning. She was then sober. In the evening, at about 10 o’clock, Mr De Carteret called on witness to assist him in carrying his (De Carteret’s) wife up the stairs. Witness assisted, after hesitation, and found the woman lying at the bottom of the stairs in a pool of blood.
Mr Peter De Carteret, deceased’s husband, said he saw his wife at noon on Saturday, when she appeared sober. He returned from work at 4.30, when he found that she had been drinking, but was able to prepare tea. Witness remained home until 8.30, when he went to l’Islet public house and had a couple of drinks. When he returned at 10.30 p m, he found his wife had fallen to the bottom of the stairs. He called for assistance and had her carried upstairs. On Sunday morning as his wife appeared very bad witness telephoned for a doctor.
Dr Jones said he was called at 10.30 on Sunday morning and proceeded to the house where he found Mrs De Carteret who was lying on a very filthy bed and in a filthy room. The woman never recovered consciousness and died at about 7 o’clock in the evening. deceased was suffering from alcoholic poisoning. The woman had a fracture of the skull.
The Court returned a verdict of accidental death and severely censured the husband for not calling a doctor before the Sunday morning.
