Served Guernsey Company of Royal Irish Regt 1915 2bn Stormed and carried the village of Le Pilly 19 Oct were on the following day cut off and surrounded suffering heavy losses.
The 1914-15 Star Medal of the British Empire, for service in WWI. Approved in 1918, for issue to officers and men of British and Imperial forces who served between 5 August 1914 and 31 December 1915. transferred to ROYAL IRISH FUSILEERS  7th  Bn  D Company

16 September 1916 his sister Annie Mrs Laurence of Kings Road Vale , wrote to Guernsey Evening Press saying that James her brother had been wounded in the head , this is the third he has sustained also he had been gassed in 1915 he has two other brothers in the Army he was in the Royal Irish Fusiliers Harry the other Whilby in the Dorset Regiment. unbeknown to her
Harry had been killed on the 3rd September KIA Delville Bois, Ginchy, Fr along with cousin Peter de Carteret on the same day by a shell .his death was in the press on the 13 Sept but Harry was posted missing presumed dead .
[N.b.] Hill 60 is near Messines, and 6th RIR fought there in 1917.. Hill 60 i believe, was an enormous spoil heap and not a hill at all.
He remained in France after the Armistice of 11 Nov 1918 serving with the Labour Corps Burying the the dead and those found on the battle field along with much spent munitions. they were payed over and above the normal army rates for this work
