Notes for James (Spouse 1)
Served as a Lieutenant of the Royal Prince in 1665;and probably as a reward for his having distinguished himself in the the actions between the English and Dutch fleets, under the command of the Duke of York, and Opdam, was in the same year appointed commander of the Oxford. In 1666 he was for a short time Captain ,as was his brother Benjamin, the previous year,of the Jersey a ship of some fifty guns,In 1668 commanded the Foresight.
Was sent by his father to the American ,land to represent him as one of the lords proprietors of Carolina, with a barony of 12.00 acres nr the head of the Cooper River.
In the same year 1671 he was in New York,1672 arriving in New Jersey where his father was proprietor, but he seems to have promoted dissension in the NJ Goverment ,over Taxes which resulted in a revolt by the tax payers ,but this died out ,he then left .
In the April of 1673 he married Frances du la Val daughter of Thomas who was Mayor of New York
James and Frances set out for the Carolinas but the ship was captured by the Dutch, and they were set ashore in VA.Records show that in 1674 he was resident in Bahamas W.I. which his father held land
By 1676 he was back in NY,Where he brought Bedlows Island off of the widow of Isaac Bedlow,In 1758 the Island was purchased by the city of New York when it was called Kennedys Island Who where and when did Kennedy buy,James to all accounts was leading a dissolute life.Yet in October of 1677 he was Nominated as Magistrate ,at Harlem. He was dissinherited by his father, returning to Jersey to plead his case, which begs the question ,as his father was to the best of knowledge in England .however he died in the island in 1682.
His wife traveled to the island in 1685 along with her two small children, dying there in 1688
1672 June 15. Letter. The Council to Govr. Philipp CARTERETT, anim-adverting on the conduct of Capt. James CARTERETT and others, who pretend to act as Deputies, and urging the Governour to go to England
and lay the matter before the Proprietors. 578
