Notes for Vice Admiral Richard Harliston Sir .
Sir Richard Harliston,nb.no record of his being knighted,by either Edward 1V.or Richard 111,Duke of York.(b) at Humberstone Lincolnshire.and brough up in the household of Richard.duke of York.He would be 16 years old when Margaret of York was born and would have been in contact with the family through the early years of both thier lives , So one can see the involvment in later events .
On the accession of Edward 1V,Richard became a yeoman of the the kings chamber and was made vice-admiral, after some years in the fleet working his way up to the appointed Rank .In which latter capacity he came to Guernsey with a small fleet in 1463.Three years
previously the castle of Mont Orgeuil in Jersey had been captured by a French noble ,Pierre de Breze,Count de Maulevrier,who had since held half of that island against Phillip de Carteret,sire de st Ouen.
Richard crossed over to Jersey in 1468and with Phillip planned an attack on the French and Mont Orgeuil
retaken after a six month siege 17 May to October,the people of Jersey chose Sir Richard to be thir Captain General,but he shortly went back to England.
A patent dated the 13 January 1473,made him captain of the islands of Jersey.Guernsey.Sark.and Alderney,being the first to bear this title of ‘Captain in Chief’ Harliston held this office for many years and became very popluar,he added a tower to the Castle of Mont Orgeuil.which became the ‘Harliston Tower’ It was said that at the time of the fall of Richard the third Harliston had thought to make himself “Lord of the Islands” under the protection of the French and the Duchess,Margaret de Burgundy,but had been prevented by the diligence of the inhabitants,not those who had wanted him for their Captain General,mostly the supporters of Henry Tudor.
He awas one of those attainted for joining the Earl of Lincoln in Simnels rebellion in 1486(Roll of Parliment vi 397-8)but on the 4th of Sept of that year a General Pardon was granted him;
In the pardon he was described as late of Jersey,esquire ( Materials illustrative of the Reign of Henry V11,ii.30,rolls ser.)
Richard took refurge with Margaret of Burgundy and in 1495 was one of Perkin Warbecks supporters who were attainted for landing at Deak in Kent, (rolls of Parl vi,504.”late of London Knight”) He remained in Margarets service till his death.wherupon she paid for his Honourable Burial.A probable place of burial was ,”Malines”where Margaret had her court.She died 25 August 1482 and was buried at Angers Cathedral Rene
During the reign of Edward 1V 4/3/1460-9/10/70 Harliston is mentioned as being excepted from several acts of resumption,and is spoken of as the Yeoman of our Chamber or Yeoman of our corone (ib,v 537.vi84,87) No record of his being Knighted,
His daughter Margaret, married Phillip de Carteret(d1500) grandson of his old ally and by him had some 21 children;Sir Phillip (1584-1643) was a desent of Phillip imprisioned in 1494 by Mathew Baker who was at that time Govenor of Jersey.but was released by order of Henry V11,as a result of a plea by Phillips wife.
