The following “Deed from rector of Coates acknowledging the Demesnes to be free from tiths”
dated 18th January 1696.ref Atkyns deeds book.in possession of lord Bathurst.
Whereas,Coates Woods and Manor fields now divided into several grounds and known by the name of the Cunnigree, the 20acres lynig under coates wood, also a pasture ground called Chapmere of some 40 acres, lying partly in the parish of Saperton and part in Coates, were always deemed to be the demesne of the manor of Coates, and have not paid tithes to the rector till the latter part of the time of Mr Mountstephen was rector ,sometimes somewhat has been paid in lieu of the ground called Chapmere to Mr Elias Carteret the present incumbent to the manifest wrong and prejudice of the inheritance of Sir Robert Atkyns, and the rector lately took away corn off Chapmere challenging the same for his due wereupon a suite of law was begun against Elias Carteret:and neighbouring ministers that the tiths of the said lands, memtioned being the demesne lands of the said manor do belong to Sir Robert Atkyns, and not the rector.
Elias Carteret Acknowledges............&c the truth and disclaims any right of tithes in these grounds.
Signed ,Elias Carteret.
