Notes for Amias Poulett
Amias Lt Governor of Jersey 1556 Governor on his fathers death in 1573”Went on a happy go lucky route of Catholicism after the death of Queen Mary,He smashed the all of the remaining statues to the saints at Mont Orgueil Castle and ordered that the alter slabs be used for gun platforms”No proof of this fact has come to light ,it could be a case for a dig at the castle to find the remains of either the alter slabs,or broken statues.
It was said that Amias had encouraged Guillaume Morise to set up the first Reformed Church in St Helier and request Queen Elizabeth 1 to allow the use of the Calvinst Book of Divine Service in Jersey ,his son Anthony was to succeed as Governor in 1590,Amias perversely equated catholicism with sorcery and hated both but it was his brother George who became the most successful witch-finder of jersey.1
