The plot thickens....I have just found (in 1891 Census) a John Francis De Carteret 61yrs, b St. Helier, Jersey (and wife Elizabeth + 6 children and three servants) which would make him born 1830, therefore he could have enlisted in the Confederate Army at 30 yrs of age, but perhaps even more interesting his occupation shown as Retired Lieutenant 21st Fusiliers (a military man)?
His wife Elizabeth was born in Italy if you then go to page 453 of the "Plantagenet Roll of the Blood Royal" (sounds good) you'll find
Elizabeth Tennyson m 20 April 1876 to John Francis de Carteret of Oaklands Jersey, late Lieutenant 21st Royal Scots Fusiliers they have 4 children

I think I'm reading it correctly in saying that Elizabeth's uncle is, Alfred Lord Tennyson 1st Baron Tennyson b 6 Aug 1809 d 6 Oct 1892. DCL FRS Poet Laureate 1850-1892 !!!
