At the age of twelve years William De Carteret entered the British navy.
One of his objects in taking up this kind of a life was to obtain an education.
He served in the navy until he was eighteen {21} years 1891 old and when mustered out went
To Victoria, British Columbia. Soon after arriving there he heard of a position
Open with the Bell Telephone Company of Seattle. He at once applied for the
place, securing it, and this was the beginning of a career which has lasted
Until the present time. During the thirty-four years he was with this company he
Was sent to various cities to build up run-down telephone exchanges. In the
great earthquake and fire in San Francisco in 1906 the records of the company
Were destroyed. Mr. De Carteret was one of the few men who, from his own notes,
could supply much of the information to rewrite the history of the telephone
Business on the Pacific coast. In 1922 he severed his connection with the Bell
Company. At that time he was one of the oldest and recognised as one of the best
telephone men on the coast a reputation won purely by strict attention to
business.
On April 1, 1922, he purchased the telephone system in Exeter and became
A resident of that city. When he took possession the company had about three
Hundred subscribers. Mr. De Carteret has almost doubled that number and in many
Ways has improved the service. All subscribers are now on what is known as the
Selective system. In addition to his telephone interests he carries a complete
Stock of electrical goods. He was one of the early experimenters in radio
activity and it is believed he is the only man in the United States to be the
Exclusive owner of as large a telephone system as that of Exeter.
Mrs. De Carteret was formerly Miss Maud Lang, of Napa, California, where
Her family was numbered among the pioneers. Mr. and Mrs. De Carteret have one
Son : Percy De Carteret

On July 5, 1891, HMS WARSPITE arrived in Esquimalt for repairs of structural faults resulting from war action in Chile.

Our four midshipmen probably began their shore leave on the 9th or 10th of July.  They set off in two canoes purchased from the natives by Midshipman De Montmorency, and weren’t expected back until Friday July 18th.   They had planned to enjoy a few days camping at Pedder Bay, near where the Rocky Point Ammunition Deport is now situated.  Their instructions were not to go beyond Race Rocks, on account of the treacherous currents.  When they failed to return on Friday, a steam launch was sent for them.  It came back with the news that the residents of Manor Farm, near Pedder Bay, had said that the midshipmen had left for Esquimalt on Wednesday July 15.

One of the canoes was found floating bottom upwards off Beacon Hill, on that same Wednesday, by a fisherman.  The second was found abandoned at Albert Head with a tin cup and a paddle tied under the seat, mast up, and sail hanging in the water.  A pocket knife was also found.  On Wednesday July 22, Admiral Hotham wired London that the young men had been lost.
