a record “XXVl & XXVll that Reginalad had two privi seals (1) being a squirrel squating beneath what appears to be two Scallop shells or Ermine Spots. the other is without the above set within a Rectangular ring face , Scallop shells refered to the user being a pilgrim to
Santiago de Compostela in Spain the scallop shell, many pilgrims wore one as a sign to anyone on the road that they were a pilgrim. This gave them privileges to sleep in churches and ask for free meals, but also warded off thieves who dared not attack devoted pilgrims.
On return they placed it on the Shield to state they had been there

It appears Gustin family has two de Carteret branches. The male line runs from Generation 1 to Gen. 16. Then, in Gen. 17, Jeannette de Carteret becomes the grandmother of (Gen. 19) Jeanne Messervy, who marries another Carteret, George de Carteret. Their daughter, Marguerite de Carteret, becomes the great-grandmother of Augustine Jean, who after arriving in the New World, becomes John Gustin.:

In your St.Martin's Church a marriage took place between Lady Marguerite deSausmarez
and Sir Thomas de Havilland in 1437 or thereabouts..  I am searching for  confirmation
of this marriage. I descend from Jeannette de St Martin and Renaud de Carteret 1387-1480.
Do you know if St.Martin's Church keeps records going that far back for
the marriage I am searching for?
