The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889 - 1931) Friday 4 December 1908"

Lieutenant Havilland J. de Carteret, formerly of the 79th Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, died on Wednesday at Adelaide in his seventy-sixth year. He was born at Guernsey (one of the Channel Islands), and his father was a colonel of the local militia. On the completion of his military studies he joined the Cameron Highlanders one of the most famous of Scotland's gallant regiments, and shortly afterwards was ordered with his companions in arms to the Crimea. As a component part of the Highland Brigade, under Sir Colin Campbell, the regiment rendered splendid service, especially at the battle of the Alma, where the magnificent work it accomplished drew forth the highest encomiums from Kinglake, the historian of the war.
During the progress of the battle young de Carteret received a severe wound in the jaw from a shell splinter, and in consequence was invalided, to England.

On the news of the outbreak of the Indian mutiny reaching the old country the Cameron's were hastily dispatched to the scene of the trouble, and Lieutenant de Carteret had sufficiently recovered to accompany them. There the regiment had some tough fighting, and for nine months was constantly engaged with the rebels, notably at the battles of Bareilly, engagements at Allygunge, Shahjehanpore, Kompore, Kussia, Bundwa Kote. and at the passages of the Gogra and Raptee rivers.

On returning to England after the mutiny had been suppressed, Lieutenant de Carteret retired from the army, and as things were lively in New Zealand he sailed for Wellington, where he at once obtained a commission in the military police. After an adventurous career in Maoriland Lieutenant de Carteret Had been Awarded a Life Pension of £ 4 per month by the Indian Goverment we were informed by the Imperial Pensions Office he is 74 years of age .Residing at South Yarra came to Australia, and settled down in Melbourne, where he resided for some years. Owing to failing health he was ordered a change, and accordingly moved to Adelaide some months ago.

About six weeks since his illness took a serious turn, and he gradually sank. Under the regulation recently enacted by the Federal Government his remains will be accorded a military funeral this afternoon. The members of the Scottish Corps will provide the necessary pipers and firing party, and the remains will be conveyed to their last resting place on a gun carriage, for which Messrs. Smith & Timms have generously provided the horses. Other members of the local defence forces are also likely to attend.
