Viscountess Carteret,and Countess Granville.
The summer of 1723 was spent in Germany with the King George 1 as John was the only minster who could speak German,he together with Lord Townsend as Secretary of State”you will see by my lords dispatches how much ye king is pleased with your conduct”
There are letters dated ,13 Aug.23 Sept 1723.the August letter which was writen by John denying
the calummy that he had insinuated that money had been improperly distributed during recent treaty negotiations,an interesting letter insomuch as it shows of the struggle between Carteret and
Walpole for political supremacy ,John through his abilty to speak direct to the king had gained him the influence over Walpole,”Count Welling gives out ,yet he can bring proofs,I have said yet ye Treaty made with the king as Elector cost his Majesty a great sum of money. If he would insinuate by yet expression yet money was given candestinely, nothing can be more scandalous, nor false far from saying any such thing,I never gave the least hint yet was to any one living.”
In 1743 John was back in Germany for what purpose at this point we do not know, but his wife died
and was buried in Hanover.
