The de Carteret Dispute.
Philippe sailed to America in 1665 and became Governor of New Jersey,there he founded Elizabethtown named after his wife. Pierre went to the Carolinas,
arriving in Abemarle on the 23rd of February 1664/5.He wrote an account
of how he had tried for some seven years to establish a plantation,growing
corn also raising hogs,but his efforts defeated by the hurricanes.

James de Carteret,son of Sir George was made a landgrave of Carolina,but he was against Philippe,and tried to depose him as Governor of N.J.as a result
Phillippe was for a time imprisoned in New York.
