WEEKLY PRESS

THE LATE Mr FREDERICK DE CARTERET
The late Mr Frederick de Carteret, who passed away at La Village, Guernsey, on Friday, April 7, 1916, aged 8o and 6 months, was the second son of Philip de Carteret of Mont au PrĂȘtre, Jersey. He was one of the few remaining members of the oldest family of that island (his direct unbroken descent in the male line from Guy Earl Carteret, A.D. 1000 being recorded at the College of Arms) in the making of whose history the de Carteret’s played so large a part for close on 900 years. Mr de Carteret was in the old Green’s service from the age of 17, and commanded both the “Alfred” and the “Anwick Castle,” only retiring after the Suez Canal opened.
He married in 1867, Emma Mary Penny, daughter of Alfred Penny, M Inst. C.E, who survives him. Of their six children three are living. Frederick St George, Superintendent of Railway Police in Agra, India, and two daughters, one of whom has been nursing for 18 months at the front in the Queen Alexandra Nursing Service.
Mr de Carteret was interested in everything which promoted the well-being of the young men of this country and most particularly in the Army Scripture Readers’ Society, his last public act being to welcome Bishop Taylor-Smith, the able and earnest Chaplin-General of the Forces to stay in his house and speak on its behalf.
The funeral took place on Tuesday at the Foulon at 3.30 p.m.
